Last summer, I took my nephew and son to a little pond and rented a pole to introduce them to fishing. Now, this pond is at a resort and you can see these monsterous fish in the bottom - so it all seemed a little too easy. The guys who rented me the poles also said that the best bait to use is string chees - no wonder the fish are so big.
I led the two boys down to the pond and, while holding my 2 yr old, tried to show the 7 yr old how to put the cheese on the hook without getting poked, and how to cast the pole without tangling up the line. Neither lesson got through. He pricked his finger with the hook, notted up the line and sent the cheese into the pond on its own. I knew then that this was not going to go well.
I straightened out the line, cheesed up the hook and cast the line into the pond while my nephew held my screaming son back. It looked OK, so I handed the pole to my nephew. That is until the fish below made a slight move toward the bait and my nephew yanked the hook back as hard as he could - only to lauch the cheese behind us into the parking lot. Not the way to catch a fish.
I thought I could get us all back on track, but then the bees arrived. They liked the cheese - probably more than the fish which had not even glanced at our bait again. The boys started running around screaming about the bees while I tried to get the line baited and back in the water. It was hopeless. The end result of my first fishing excusion with the boys - no fish.
